Meditation is the yoga of the mind
Many people are interested in meditation. I imagine it may become as widespread as yoga, maybe more so. In fact, they’re two aspects of the same thing.
The physical postures – or asanas – that many of us associate with yoga belong to a tradition going back thousands of years. Yoga is a Sanskrit word whose literal translation is yoke, from the root yuj meaning to join or unite.
Yoga is a physical, mental and spiritual discipline. In this context, the physical postures were traditionally a preparation for meditation, sometimes described as the yoga of the mind.
You had to be in good physical shape in order to sit there for hours. Fortunately, other forms of meditation have been developed that aren’t physically demanding. You can practise them sitting in a chair at home, in your office, on a plane – anywhere.
That’s why I believe meditation may become at least as widespread as physical yoga. If it does, the world will be a much happier place.
